The world is split into 25 time zones that include all letters of the alphabet except the letter J. The widget helps you figure out the equivalent of times on the standard 12-hour clock to those of the 24-hour military clock, as well as the reverse. Generally, when conversing with other military personnel in the same time zone, you will use the local time zone rather than GMT. That might change for you if you have just enrolled in boot camp or you are thinking about a career in the military. It is important to understand the 24-hour military time system before interacting with military personnel. For instance, 0333 can be read as zero-three hundred thirty-three hours. In military time, 0000 or “zero hundred hours” is the correct way to indicate midnight (12 am). That said, you will find that people use both 2400 and 0000 interchangeably. The ability to use military time is invaluable even if your profession doesn’t require it, as you are going to come up against the 24-hour format at some point in time. Military time is becoming a more common way to express time as people realize how much clearer it is for making plans. Emergency services such as nursing homes, hospital wards, and intensive care units also use the 24-hour clock but do not refer to it as military time. Although the phrase “military time” is commonly used, this time system was not invented by the military. The 24-hour clock had already been employed throughout Europe for years before the U.S. military adopted it.
